House-training?

What’s the best way to house-train your puppy? I have a Yorkie and it seems no matter what I do, he still goes on the floor wherever/whenever he feels like it.
The absolutely best way is crate training in a crate the appropriate size for a Yorkie! For the most part, puppies like to be clean so they won’t poop where they sleep. When you take him out of the crate, immediately take him to the part of your yard you want him to eliminate in and give elimination a command word-potty, go poop, whatever-just remember you may have to say the word in public. Take him out as soon as he wakes up and after meals and feed his last meal in the early evening so you can take him out right before you go to bed. You shouldn’t leave your puppy in a crate for extended periods of time though during the day. Don’t expect to leave him for 8 or 10 hours at a time. And when you can’t watch your puppy he should be kept in the crate. And if he eliminates in the house, take a newspaper, roll it up, and smack yourself in the head, for not paying attention and getting him outside. Punishing a dog for eliminating inside when you aren’t watching it is just wrong!

The way Ive always trained my dogs is to use positive reinforcement. Dogs dont understand when you get mad at them like people think they do….they dont know why youre mad…they just know your mad. Make a habit of taking your dog outside at regular times so they get used to it. When they do what you want give them a treat. After they start to do it on their own start to ween them off the treats and before you know it youll have a housebroken dog. Since your dog is already going in the house make sure you clean up the spots well. The smell of urine is to dogs what running water is to humans.

Crate training is by far the best way to train a dog.

There's a link below to a site that explain how.

Our dog was returned to the pound by 5 different people before we got her. They all said she was "untrainable." We adopted her, crate trained her, and she never has an accident indoors now unless she's physically sick.

Every puppy is different in how long it takes to understand house training. You should only expect your puppy to be able to “hold it” in hours that its age is in months. So a puppy 3 months old should be taken outside every 3 hours – with the exception of overnight, in which case you should let the puppy out last thing before you go to bed and first thing in the morning when you wake up. If the puppy wakes up in the night to go to the bathroom carry him outside with as little talking and stimulation as possible (NO PLAYING!) and when the puppy has finished put him right back to bed.

When taking a puppy outside, it should be put in an area that you’ve designated for its bathroom business, and should not be allowed to play or be brought back inside until it has done its business.

You can actually teach your dog to pee on command if you start right away – while you are waiting for the puppy to pee give the command (choose ONE – go pee, go potty, or something similar), while its going repeat the command over and over quietly, and give the puppy lots of praise when its finished.

Immediately when the puppy wakes up and after feeding, the puppy should be taken outside. If the puppy is crate trained, pick up the puppy when letting it out and carry it outside to prevent accidents on the way out.

We don’t recommend paper training. This is actually twice the work because you have to train the puppy to “go” on the paper, and then train it to “go” outside. Often, even after the puppy is house trained it will have accidents in the house because it has not learned that it is inappropriate to go to the bathroom inside.

Water intake should not be limited, although a helpful hint while housetraining is to only leave the food and water down for 15 minutes at meal times. Otherwise lift up the bowls and do not give any food or water after 6pm. These timed feedings help you to put your puppy on a timed schedule to help you know when the puppy will need outside. (Once your puppy is trained and is able to let you know clearly when he needs to go outside it is advisable to leave his water out at all times.)

Just keep taking your dog outside to go to the potty. Take them to the same place every time. Then make a really big deal out of them going outside, and give them a treat.

for small breed like the Yorkshire Terrier you can go the store and stock up on wee wee pads to teach him to use instead of your floor and you can also buy a wire cage to keep him in when he can not be shaparoned, these cages have a removeable tray to catch the dogs waste products so they can not get it all over thereselves and they certainly can not play in their own messes or eat their own stools.

I had to keep a german shepherd in there or else she would destroy our household and trash the place. She was smart enough to know how to unlatch the door and got into worse trouble than ever but she was still loved all the same.

I remember when I was trying to potty train my puppy I used "Potty Training Aid for Puppies Simple Solution". I sprayed it on the newspaper and that seemed to work for her. You can usually get it at Petco or Petsmart. Here's the link under my sources, with information on this product.

    Hope that helps :)
