What is a good, soft dog treat recipe to reward my puppy with while house training?

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

I am looking for a dog treat recipe to reward my puppy with when she goes to the bathroom outside. The recipe has to make very soft treats because she is still very young and can't chew hard treats very easily. Does anyone know what a good recipe is or where I could find one?

You can give her little bits of cheese or dabs of peanut butter! Soft enough, right?

Can anyone offer advice on house training puppies?

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

I have a 8 month old heeler and she was inside for a while but i got too stressed trying to house break her. I didn't want to take her back so she now is outside. And I feel really bad about doing so. I want to bring her back inside and train her right. But, I'm planning on getting a 2 month old hound. But, I'm dedicated to training them both. So anyone with advise on house training, helping them get use to each other, and other things i may need to know about young puppies. Please help!
:) thanks!!!!

ok first of don't get the hound in till you have house broken you heeler. It will only get worse with two untrained dogs. You will only be getting your self in to a mess. I have an 11 and 4 month old dachshunds the older on is fully house broken and we still have a hard time with the newer puppy so please save your self the stress and problems and get your heeler trained first.

But as for training; take her out after she eats, sleeps, long walks, chews for a long time, or plays. All these activities will make her need to go. Fortunately your dog will be able to hold it longer because of her age. When ever she goes praise her and tell her what a good girl she is and immediately take her inside, that way she knows that outside is where she goes potty and then gets to come right back in and be with you. For a while you will need to take her out on a leash so that she won't go wondering around and think it is play time. It is strictly potty time out side, unless you say other wise. When she is inside watch to see if she starts wonder away by herself or circling or squatting, all are signs that she needs to go potty. When you start to take her outside say it's time to go potty or something like that.

If she does make a mess in the house, don't scold her unless you catch her in the act, she won't remember doing it.

Also if you don't crate her, I suggest you do. Crating can be difficult for a dog who isn't used to it but is extremely wonderful at night time and when you aren't at home.

It might be difficult for the first few days or weeks but keep doing it and someday your dog will be house trained! Good luck!

by the way it is extremely rewarding when she will be finally house trained and you have a great dog!

Help with house training my puppy when he goes indoor after taking him outdoors?

Friday, February 27th, 2009

How do you train a puppy to go outdoors and what do you do when he does indoors after being let out. Appreciate all the help with this and also if someone has good training to train puppy quickly on chewing and biting.

http://www.midwesthomes4pets.com/Information/HowToCrateTrain.aspx After you have walked your puppy and he doesn't potty crate him when you get home for about 20 minutes then walk him again. That will remind him what the walk was for to begin with.Don't let him out and not watch to make sure he does go potty. You need to see him go. If he's biting you playing take his lip and pinch it against his teeth and tell him no bite. Then have a toy ready to give him to show him what's OK to chew.

puppy house training! they now know to go outside because the weather has been good and the doors been open?

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

what is the next bit where they let me know when they want to go out, they go out voluntarily, but not if the doors are shut, they are 12 weeeks old! and i dont have to worry about night time because I can leave the warm laundry room door open! not been able to take them out yet, final jab is next week.

I like to hang a small bell on the door… Each time you take them out, jingle the bell…soon they will catch on to jingling the bell when they need to go out..Consistency is the key..

Sounds like you are on the right track..

House training puppy impossible!?

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

HELP! I have a new puppy and she is IMPOSSIBLE to house train! I take her outside every hour to two hours. I take her food 5 hours before I go to bed and her water 3 hours before I go to bed as the vet suggested. I had a puppy pad DIRECTLY next to the door. I give her treats & praise her when she does good outside. And still after all that, she still goes right in front of the door! Whether it's pee or poop it doesnt matter. For a couple days she was doing good. If she had to go in-between going out she went on the pad, now she isn't even doing that! I have another puppy from the same litter as her and that puppy does good going inside, she doesnt use the puppy pad and doesnt go in the house. Why is it so hard for my other puppy to learn?
She does go in her crate, she is in there all night, but I cannot leave her in there all day! She has a very small cage since she is small but still has slightly enough room to go in one corner and sleep in the other!
What are house training droplets & how do they work?
she doesnt give us ANY communication. Sometimes she will just go to the door and sniff aroud and then go back to her bed. But when she goes by the door to go she does nothing but go up to the door 1-3 feet away and just squats and goes. :(
Aw welcome to the labor of love with a puppy! Some pups r just a bit slow when it comes to house training. My dog was nearly 5 months old b4 he got it down 100%. Just keep doing what your doing. I would suggest stopping the puppy pad thing all together and just take her out to pee. If she messes in the house say NO, and take her out, she will get it, she might just be a slow learner

In house behaviour training for puppy?

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Any good website that I can learn to do in house behaviour training for puppy? She is 3 months old, and exhibit some aggressive biting, that needs to rectify asap, but she is still too young for the training class.

If your pet has had all injections she is not too young for Obedience classes which will instruct you as to lead training and so on.l do not know a particular site to visit to find out about house training as she should have been taught the basics the minute you got her.House training is merely conditioning so take her outside first thing in the Morning and after meals and praise her when she does her jobs. The aggressive biting is her her way of telling you that she is more dominant than you and MUST be stopped as mouthing and nipping once it sets in is very hard to re-train.If you use a crate as her sleeping quarters than she should be able to hold on through the night and the other naughty behaviour you must designate a bad behaviour spot not the crate but you can shut her outside is she misbehaves or put her somewhere she cannot see you and be left alone and she will soon learn what is acceptable and what is not.If you google how to house rain a puppy and aggression in pups you will find plenty of sites

help with house-training two puppies?!?

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

got two puppies the other week and while i'm at school its hard to control their toiletry habits.

we keep them in the yard and there is no grass -all tiles and i would like them to use a kitty litter like box- except with newspaper.

at the moment they pretty much do whatever they want.
help! :)
Is there someone who can help potty train and watch your pups while you are gone?

My first guess is that you have two small breed puppies b/c you want to litter train them. Small breeds take longer to potty train then older dogs b/c they have smaller bladders. With you not there to teach them where to go they may have a hard time understanding when you are there.

As a rule of thumb a dog should be going out how many months old they are in hours. So if they are 3 months old every 3 hours. Using this system not only allows them to go out enough but it also help you to train them.

For litter training i suggest skipping teach them to go outside and start teaching them to go in the litter box. I also suggest replacing the newspaper idea with puppy pads. One they have chemicals in them to help encourage they go there and two they are much easier to clean up. Use reward based training.. bring them to it and when they go on it give them a treat..if you catch them going else where say "ah ah" and take them to the pad and then reward if they go.

House training Puppy?

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

I have a male cross-bred puppy, I got him from a rescue centre (so he is not really house trained).
My problem is that I let him out at night (until he barks to come back in). There is always pee on the floor in the morning (we have newspaper all over the kitchen). He is left sometimes during the day but never makes a mess (we usually walk him in the woods first - is this why?).
Any training trips please?

When you let him outside at night, go out with him and make sure that he urinates. Praise him. Make sure that you pick up his water about 2 hours before you are ready for bed. You will have to use a strong cleanser to remove the smell of the urine on the kitchen floor. Check with your vet, they will have pet safe cleaners. Even though you may not be able to smell anything your puppy can and until the odor is removed, he will continue to do this.

If this does not work, you will need to crate him at night for about a two week period. This can be a dog kennel or a cardboard box that he can not climb out of. It needs to be just big enough for him to lay down in. Dogs will not mess in their cage if they can at all avoid it. As soon as you get up in the morning, take him out to an area in the yard that you want him to use as his restroom. As soon as he goes, really praise him and pet him. Take him in immediately. If you want him to play outside, that is okay, AFTER he does his business and you take him inside. Once he is inside after a couple of minutes you can let him outside to play. This shows him that you expect him to go outside for urination. You must do this constistantly for the two week period and he must urinate before you let him back inside.

As he gets older he will have more control over his bladder and you will not have to put his water up at night. And walking does help a dog take care of his business so the walk in the woods is very helpful.

Whatever you do, do not spank or rub the puppies nose is his puddle. He will not know what he is getting introuble for. If you see him squatting, clap your hands together loudly and in a firm voice, without using his name, say, "Bad dog!" Pick him up and take him outside, when he does his business, in a softer voice, praise him and pet him. Discipline and praising only work if they are done immediately after what you do not like or immediately after the behavior you do like.

Dogs are pack animals and by making him do what you want him to, you will become the Alpha. You can also achieve this by making him sit before you put his food down for him to eat. Dogs want to have an alpha, if you aren't the alpha, he will.

Good luck and these suggestions should work for you.

what is best method for house training puppy?

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

I recently adopted a 3 mo old jack russell mix. she seems very bright and has mastered a few "tricks" but insists on doing her business indoors. I take her out about once an hour and always when I catch her attempting to go inside. I use petting and treats as rewards, but still no progress.

Try to use a crate for potty training. That's what i did, and it worked. Now i have a bell that i hang on my door, and when i ring it, he knows that he's supposed to come outside to pee or poop. And you should only give him treats when he does it outside. Anyways, now when my dog needs to pee or poop or even just go outside to play, he rings the bell on our door. Hope that helped!
