How do I Start House Training Puppies?

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

House training puppies is the most important task to be followed right after adopting a puppy.  Successful puppy training doesn’t have to end in frustration. It can instead be a very short smooth road.  For best results, it’s important to keep involved with your pet as much as possible.  Crate training is generally regarded as the most effective means of house training puppies.  Crate training is an old standard for house training puppies and dogs.  Successful l  house training require much more patience, and a little more effort than with an older or adolescent dog.  Lora Verni, a certified dog trainer with many years of experience, gives us the advantage of her expertise with this simple, yet highly effective book on house training puppies.

Puppies less than 4 months of age have little control over their bladder bowels and extremely young pups less than 9 weeks should not be crated because they eliminate very frequently.  Puppies will always need to go first thing in the morning, last thing at night, when they wake up from a nap, when they leave their crate, after finishing a meal or after a playtime.  Puppies don’t have the ability to eliminate everything in their bladder and bowels on the first squat.  They should be taken out every hour, as well as shortly after meals, playtime and naps.  Puppies need to be given the opportunity to urinate and defecate outside multiple times during the day and night.  Puppies will have some accidents no matter how good a job you do in training her.

Crate training means putting your dog in a crate.  It may seem cruel, but it’s actually one of the kindest things you can do for your puppy.  Crate training is very important when house training dogs and puppies.  Crate training is generally regarded as the most effective means of house training puppies.  Crate training is an old standard for house training puppies and dogs.  Dogs naturally do not want to soil their sleeping quarters or “dens,” which is what their crate represents.  Crate your pup for short periods of time while you are at home and in the same room.  Crate training generally takes one to two months, depending on the breed of your dog and how much time you spend on the training process.

Housebreaking is usually the first thing on the training list for new puppies and teaching them that your floors and carpets are not their personal restroom can be a challenge, A first-time owner might think his puppy has a plumbing problem, but usually it’s just a case of him or her being in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Timing is everything.  The only time you can correct your puppy for making a mistake is if you catch him in the act.  It makes no sense to scold your puppy after finding the mess on the floor.  You need to discipline your puppy while he or she is in the act of messing up the floor.

House training puppies should be looked upon as a training exercise.  Successfully house training puppies doesn’t have to end with a 12 month battle of wills it can instead be a very short smooth road.  Successfully house training puppies require much more patience, and a little more effort than with an older or adolescent dog.  Lora Verni, a certified dog trainer with many years of experience, gives us the advantage of her expertise with this simple, yet highly effective book on house training puppies.

The Importance of Potty Training Your Puppy

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Just like babies, puppies have no control of when or where they “unleash their goods”. Having a puppy urinate inside your house is definitely not going to make you happy and it won’t do any good for your puppy when you get mad with him/her.

It’s important that you tackle this issue early on in the pup’s life and teach them some discipline. You may be surprised to hear this, but it’s true that a dog that has an authority figure and learns right from wrong will lead a more prosperous life and will make your job of caring for them much easier.

It’s not too difficult to correctly potty train your puppy, however keep in mind the process can take anything up to 1 year.

So how exactly do you potty train your puppy? Read on to find out the basic techniques and a lot of useful advice.

Restrict the Puppy’s Freedom
You should restrict the area in which the puppy can move around. What this will do is decrease the chance of the puppy urinating in a place, which they shouldn’t. Lay the potty paper in an area outside and then put a fence around so the puppy cannot roam elsewhere. It’s not supposed to be a jail so make it large enough so the puppy can run around and have fun. Of course you can take the puppy inside occasionally but you need to make it clear that the area is their home for the time being.

Wet the Potty
When setting up your potty you should place some of your pup’s urine on the paper and then walk them to it so they can smell it. This will give them the idea that the area is where they should be urinating.

One Potty,One Place
Many people who try to potty train their puppy have great difficulty, so they decide to set up multiple potty areas in hope that the puppy will use at least one of them. This is a bad idea as it will only confuse your puppy and they will not learn to use a potty effectively. You should only ever need one potty area.

It Takes Time
Younger pups need to go to the toilet every few hours, so put a leash on them and take them to the potty area and give the puppy 10 minutes to do their thing. If they don’t need to go, take the puppy back to its area and then try again in about 20 minutes. You should not play with the puppy until it uses the potty, once they do, you should reward them by playing with them, praising them or feeding them.

Reward Good Behavior
Whether you feed them or praise them, it’s essential that you reward your puppy for their good behavior. Rewarding a puppy will make them happier and teach them discipline and a happier dog in the long run is going to listen to you. A good idea is to reward them every time they use the potty.

Make a Potty Journal
By keeping a journal of the time it takes your puppy to urinate after eating, it will make it easier for you to train them and understand their habits.

Mistakes will Happen
Please remember not to get angry with your puppy if they urinate in the wrong area. At an early age they lack many skills that older dogs have much like how a toddler may urinate before they make it to the toilet. The best thing to do if your puppy urinates in a wrong place, is to simply say “no” or “bad dog”and then walk them to their potty area.

All in all, by following the above advice, your puppy will be well on there way to being potty trained and you will have a well mannered and obedient dog because of it. However make sure you give it time, it’s not something that most puppies can learn in a week or so.

POTTY TRAINING

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Although there are so many different ways to potty train a puppy. It is very difficult to find one that suit your pup’s need and fits your life style. This method is like making a potty room for your pup ( a deluxe crate with a bathroom in it) so that they don’t go all over the place in the house. This method is proven to be very simple for any pup to understand. It even works for older, un-trained, or hyper pups (also for busy owners and owners with children). -First, you must write down their daily potty times. Make a potty schedule that you BOTH can follow (because in order for you to potty train a puppy, you have to be “potty trained” also). - At the beginning you have to ask your pup to go potty (pick a word for it ex. “go potty”) - Put the pup in the gated area according to the schedule you’d made. Close the gate. - When they did go, let them out. Praise and give them a treat for everytime they did go. Do not open the gate until they did. No punisment/ yelling. This is not a time out room. -Repeat according to potty schedule. -Once they can go in and out constantly, you can remove the gate. (but they still will have that gate in their mind), and they will go there by themself and on demands. Remember my method will work but it can not be compromised. If the new owner is not as committed (and keep on forgetting to let them in, forgot to open the door for them to go outside, etc) some pups will never be potty trained. It’s not because they can not do it or becasue they ae bad puppies, but because they don’t get enough help and become very confuse of what they should do. So you really have to be very committed and consistent. It’s not just the dog. You have to be ready to be trained yourself. Select the area carefully for indoor potty training (mostly for smaller to medium dogs) For medium large to large dog, outdoor potty training is recommended. For outdoor, you can use this method. Just move the gate outside, to which area you prefer them to go. Same rituals, and after they go back to the same gated area constantly, you can remove the gate. And you will a cleaner back yard. Easy! Visit : tinytailsnkisses.com (potty training page) for more details potty training. I wish you and your pup the best ! You are welcome to send me a message if you have any questions about potty training.

What is the easiest way to potty train a puppy?

Monday, October 27th, 2008

I’ve tried puppy potty pads and those didn’t work for me. HELP!

What’s the best way to “potty train” your puppy?

Monday, October 27th, 2008

I’ve had my puppy for 4 monthes now and it seems like I’ve tried several ways to get my puppy “potty trained.” Please help! Any suggestions?
The best way is to use a crate. The puppy stays in the crate while you are away from home, sleeping, or unable to watch him/her closely. Don’t worry if it seems cruel, most puppies actually learn to like their crates. It becomes a secure place for them, like a den. Our dog continued to sleep in his crate even after we stopped making him go in it, at night. The puppy should be taken outside, on a leash, to the same spot EVERY time. No playing and keep distractions to a minimum. Keep a treat or two handy for when he/she “goes” and give lots of praise. Use a cue word, like “potty” or “outside,” or whatever you prefer. Take the puppy outside first thing in the morning, right before bedtime, and about 15 minutes after he/she eats. Puppies usually need to go potty about every hour or so. So, during the times that you are home, you need to come up with a potty schedule and stick to that. Try to watch and learn your puppy’s signals that he/she has to go. Usually, they will start sniffing around a lot and will hang out by the door.

Many new dog owners come to me on a daily basis and ask lots of questions about create training, this is perfectly normal. In fact, the general public who does not study up on proper dog training may not even have heard of crate training before. To sum up what a dog crate is: It is simply an enclosed caged area that will prevent the dog from leaving the confines of the cage.

Crate training can be done inside of the house with an indoor dog crate or even outside in the back yard with a home-made caged area for the dog. Of course you will want the inside to have plenty of room as crate training should not be done in a small overly tight manner.

What are the benefits of crate training? There are quite a few reasons why using a crate to aid in dog training has its merits. One reason would be because a crate will prevent your dog from chewing up the inside of your house while you are away. This type of crate training, by leaving the dog alone inside, should only be used temporarily until the dog learns not to chew anything outside of the crate.

Another example of when using a crate is useful is if you are traveling in your vehicle for any extended period of time. A small hand held crate with your dog inside of it will help ease his fear and excitability if he has any sort of issues with traveling.

Last but not least, crate training can be used as a perfect aid in teaching the dog how to be house broken. Many methods of dog training are used and taught by professional dog trainers when it comes to house training a puppy, and most all of them will recommend some form of crate training if requested.

Start Early and Train your Puppy

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

Housebreaking any new pet can be a difficult chore, but with repetition and practice the challenge will become easier and easier. If you want the puppy to listen only to you, then don’t allow him to play with other persons. Potty training your new puppy is a necessary evil.

You must do the same routine every single day and it is important to give your puppy a lot of extra attention as this will make the house breaking process much easier.

Your pet is living in a human world full of confusing things and behavior he can’t understand. It is better to create good habits in the beginning, if you start early you can stop behavior problems such as biting or jumping on furniture.

Every dog owner knows that when he/she treats the dog with praise the dog will get greater satisfaction and will execute the command more readily than if the dog receives discipline in another fashion. So when training your dog needs positive reinforcement.

You can train a dog on your own, or you can join an obedience training class and get instruction from professionals. You will find many resources online and most of the online sites are free and you will find many tips and secrets to dog training.

If you really want to train your puppy you will need to put some effort into it. And some type of dog is trained just for that.

Having a dog that can perform tricks and is very obedient and well trained is the pride and joy of every dog owner. While they are generally warm, loving and loyal, they can be trained to be more obedient. Even if you only have your dog inside for a short amount of time he or she must be trained not to leave a mess.

The correct position for the heel command is your dog at your left side with his shoulder and front leg aligned with your left leg. When you and your dog have a good relationship and training will come very easily. As your dog progresses in his training, youâ??ll be able to give him a command in the middle of a crowded area and heâ??ll obey you.

When training your puppy make sure you use positive experiences because negative experiences might affect your puppy, so make sure you make the training positive and fun. And this training requires frequent, consistent, and appropriately timed positive reinforcement. Unlike man, dogs do not know how to differentiate between positive and negative attention.

Your dog will its best when it receives praise, so using positive words and reinforcement you dog will do it best when training him/her. There are two elements at work here: positive reinforcement and intermittent reinforcement. All positive commands should be spoken sharply and distinctly during training.

When training your pet you can use the treat system, this system is training with a treat by rewarding your dog with his/her favorite snack for following your commands or doing something good. Try to go outside with him at least every thirty minutes or so, and make sure you praise or reward him for relieving himself outside.

Properly crate training your puppy is one of the best things that you could possibly do.
